Case: Vintersarek 2010
In the winter of 2010 a group of young enthusiasts decided to challenge themselves by living 3 months in the freezing environment of the Swedish national park - Sarek. The goal was to build up experience that resulted in a wintertime map of Sarek. Freespee helped them with their social activities.
Background
Three months in an unbelievably cold landscape without any kind of normal contact with the outside world. This was the situation faced by four Swedish hiking companions.
During the planning phase, Henrik, Joel, Petter and Josef ran a blog where they updated their friends and families and other followers with news about their upcoming expedition in Sarek. However, they soon encountered a problem with their Internet communication - that is, there was no Internet access in the national park Sarek. Of course, they had to continue updating their followers about their adventures, and with no online access the perfect solution was the Freespee service Talky!
Updating the website and Facebook using Talky
Freespee gave the Vintersarek group a satellite phone, an individual account on Talky.se, and an open group called Vintersarek 2010. Together with the Vintersarek hikers we gave their followers access to the Talky group on their website so they could listen to updates.
Since they had a Facebook site for fans, one of the goals was that their fans would be updated via Facebook when a new report was posted via Talky. A little status update was visible in the fans' news flow, as in the picture below:
To sum up
Without internet access, they still managed to keep their website and facebook site dynamic and alive.
The four companions were out in the wilderness for 90 days and created as many as 530 updates with an average of 6 updates per day. With over 36 000 playbacks the project has been a huge success!
